Cardwell + McLachlan
Cardwell+ McLachlan are represented by one of Australia’s premier galleries, Nanda/Hobbs. The sculptural paper works of Stuart McLachlan are mixed with living people or hand-built miniature sets created by both artists through the moody and emotive photography of Simon Cardwell to immerse viewers and reflect on the state of our living world. Both have taken skills from a lifetime of working experience within their specific fields to create a unique photographic collaboration.
The works featuring miniature environments are carefully hand-designed by both artists with materials sourced from their natural surroundings. Built with the randomness found in nature, viewers think they are looking at real environments until closer inspection, making them look deeper into their story.
“From concept, building to lighting and beyond, this is a true collaboration.
We work as one bringing each of our skill sets to produce something fresh. We strive to portray issues with quiet subtlety, allowing people to draw their own conclusions about the subject matter. While some images are created purely for beauty, they all have a story and underlying meaning, and that is what we want to infuse into the mind of the viewer.” – Cardwell + McLachlan
