Carol Bednarski | Beauty is what inspires me
The greatest joy for me is a connection with the viewer. Sharing my art and knowing that it has evoked an emotional response gives me a deep sense of fulfilled purpose. Being seen and connecting through art is the greatest joy and privilege of being an artist.
Born in England, Carol has traveled the world and lived in Tokyo, Los Angeles, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, and Toronto. She now lives on Vancouver Island, where she paints full-time in her home studio in Victoria. As an emerging artist on the West Coast of Canada, Carol has quickly made her presence known with her work in international, national, and regional exhibitions.
Beauty is what inspires me, in any form.
I love to explore ways to interpret beauty, whether it is internal or external, and hopeful I can translate that beauty, and the feeling it gives me, onto canvas.
I work primarily with acrylic, sometimes oils, using palette knives, brushes, scrapers, and sometimes I paint with my fingers. Often I start without a plan or even a subject, choosing to trust my inner voice to guide me. It’s hard to label my style since I don’t lock myself into one way of seeing. Being in the moment and trying new things excites me as an artist and in life.
I work spontaneously and intuitively and try to keep my critical mind from getting in the way. At some point, the painting shows me something, the hint of a place, an image, or just a mood. I get a feeling that I respond, too, and that’s when the painting starts to take shape. The rest is a dance between intuition and controlled response.”
