Discovery Art Fair returns to Cologne
140 participating galleries, projects, and solo shows are taking over the XPost Cologne in the heart of the city at the seventh edition of the Discovery Art Fair. For four days, art lovers can experience the latest that the contemporary art scene has to offer on 6,000 square meters of the completely modernized post office building from 1895.
After two editions were canceled due to the pandemic and the Art Cologne’s move to autumn, the Rhineland celebrates especially young talents with this spring art fair. Participants travel from 15 countries to present the latest positions in emerging art to art lovers. For collectors and the professional audience, the Discovery Art Fair Cologne is one of Europe’s leading platforms for new discoveries.
Countless artistic expressions are represented at the booths. The spectrum ranges from classical painting and drawing to sculptures and elaborate installations to fine art photography, graphic prints, and urban art. Whether unusual materials or experimental techniques, this fair offers plenty of space for art that pushes boundaries and breaks new ground. Especially for young collectors, newcomers to art, and occasional buyers, the sales show offers an extensive range of original works of art at reasonable prices and the unique opportunity for personal encounters with artists.
The carefully curated selection of participants promises numerous highlights. Outstanding international positions will be presented by Forum Kunst Contemporary and Galerie Felix Höller from Austria, Galerie Kunstbroeders, Kallkman Gallery and Chrysalid Gallery from the Netherlands, Galeria M from Poland, Avivson Gallery from London, CasaGalleria.ART from Switzerland or no/mad utopia from Lebanon, amongst others. The colorful art scene of the German capital city is represented by participants such as ATM Gallery Berlin, gräfe art.concept, Galerie Z22 or ExtractArt. From Munich, Loft 11 Gallery, as well as the young gallery projects Munich Art Gallery and Galerie Ritter will arrive. And of course, North Rhine-Westphalia, known for its powerful art market presence, is also highly featured. The Düsseldorf gallery Noir blanche is showing black-and-white photography of the highest level, and well-known names from the Cologne gallery scene like 30works and Galerie Reitz are celebrating a hometown event.
In the Artist Section, visitors can expect, for example, the exhibition booth of the Cuban artist Juan Andrés Milanés Benito, based in Oslo, and his project “Rehearsal of the present.” In this project, he plays art objects reminiscent of readymades, like records, on a specially designed device and artfully combines spoken, archived life stories and social commentary. Gregor Kalus impresses with black and white ink works, Alexander Rosol presents illuminated electrical boxes with digital image montages, and the Iranian-born American Negar captures contemporary history in her painting.
On top of the broad spectrum of art presented, the organizers are also planning a spatial expansion of the fair. In addition to the large exhibition hall, an over 100-year-old vaulted cellar of the former post office center will also be used. The historic spaces with round arches and columns become the stage for sculptures, installations, and 3D works. In this space, Andreas “Zypper” Reikowski, amongst others, presents sensational works of art made of Lego bricks and the Cologne Institut für Inszenierung their walk-in installation “Ins Auge des Sturms” (“Into the eye of the storm”).
