DONNA ARNOLD
LOST IN THE SEA
Donna Arnold is a fine art conceptual photographer from Chicago, Illinois.
“Photography has been a passion of mine for many years. It’s a layer of creativity hidden deep inside, only to be revealed through my art. My emotions define my artistic style: mysterious, enchanting, fairytale-like or dark and brooding. My inspiration comes from my dreams, from fairytale stories I read as a child and from a deep passion for the unknown.
I’m a self-taught artist in photography, lighting, and post-processing.
I build my own sets and props and experiment with different ideas.
I primarily use Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to create my work. Photoshoot ideas are created in my dreams and artistic imagination.
I envision a dramatic scene in my mind and turn it into a story, a feeling and then an image. I’m known for using moody tones to create a dramatic atmosphere, pulling viewers into my fantasy so they can be a part of my creation.
Photography is a huge part of my life. It’s not only what I love to do; it’s a softer, passionate side of me that people rarely get to see. One could say that my images are a window to my soul. They are dark when I feel sadness or fairytale-like when I am happy. They are a definite reflection of how I feel at any given moment.
I believe that when you are an artist you incorporate your mood into your art, that’s what makes it your own unique style. I hope my images resonate in the mind of the viewer and make an emotional impression long after they had been viewed.”
ABOUT THE MERMAID SERIES
The inspiration for my Mermaid Series came to me from a dream.
I was in total darkness in the middle of a body of water, trying to keep myself at the surface. I could feel the icy cold waters pierce my skin as I was becoming weak and out of breath. As I slowly stopped struggling to stay above the water I felt a sense of inner peace and decided to let the icy waters consume me. I woke up in deep sweat and knew I had to take this dream and transform it into art. My work allows me to explore the imagined by making it dream-like and mystical. This series of images are about a woman banished to the sea, fighting to survive but ultimately letting the sea consume her. My dream had been so dark and terrifying but also so peaceful. I wanted to incorporate all of these feelings into the series. Listen closely, you will hear my art speak to tell a surreal story.
