JANINE SEELEN | IN BETWEEN
“Communication develops between art and its viewer or listener and creates a strong bond due to the exchange of energy.” -Janine Seelen
The perception of space and time is purely personal. It is the central aspect of Janine Seelen’s work.
Our surrounding, which we generally call space, is being tested. Fast, bright, clear images on screens shape our daily life.
We are always reachable. Digital-first and instant gratification.
Seelen’s art introduces us to the opposite.
We had to experience that space combined with our respiratory reflex is a life-threatening combination. Lockdown. We are in between things, thoughts, and extremes. Between inside and out, confusion and structure, movement and stillness – in-between space. We experience that space combined with our respiratory reflex is a life-threatening combination.
Our democratic world order is faltering, and autocratic currents threaten our individual freedom. Lockdown. We are in between things, thoughts, and extremes. Between inside and out, confusion and structure, movement and standing still – in-between space.
By painting the ordinary surrounded by space, Seelen composes an invitation to pause and feel the serenity of the momentum. Multi-layered networked structures and calm zones between dissolution and demarcation. Like smells and sounds, space encapsulates a feeling, a memory – non-graspable, impossible to name, but familiar. What are our individual parts in space and the moment surrounding us?
