JOSÉ JEULAND | EXPLORING HUMAN CULTURE
A firm believer in chasing one’s passion, José Jeuland embarked on an atypical journey at the age of 25 as a professional triathlete. He participated in various competitions internationally, not knowing that his days of globe-trotting would soon lead him to discover his passion.
His strong interpersonal skills and curious, benevolent gaze on the world led him to form invaluable connections with people from diverse walks of life. With an appetite for documenting lesser-known cultures worldwide during his travels, he kick-started his journey as a professional photographer.
José’s first independent documentary project Landing in Jeju Island, was for a trail running race in 2016. He used this opportunity to pursue photography and curated a photography exhibition inspired by ‘The Haenyeo women divers of Jeju Island.’ The exhibition was hugely successful and was widely featured in various international publications. The portraits were also showcased during the iconic Irish rock band U2’s concert in Seoul as part of a tribute dedicated to powerful women in Korean history.
José mentioned, “The photography series of the Haenyeo women opened up many opportunities for me, and collaborating with the band U2 is definitely the highlight of my career. The best part was that I thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience, which was a great learning process. I believe that I have changed and grown a lot since then as a person and as a photographer. I can’t wait to return and take new pictures as a photographer with fresher perspectives.”
His craft is dominated mainly by portraits of human beings belonging to various age groups and cultures. His wealth of experiences has honed in him a highly creative vision, an intensive acuity, and a keen perception of day-to-day moments and emotions. His distinct style of photography compels audiences to feel a direct connection with the subjects; almost as if the subjects have been brought to life. José also seeks to objectively portray his subjects equally and accurately, rather than casting subjective judgment on them.
In 2020, José Jeuland launched his first photography book, Tibet. A series of photographs from this book was taken in the Tibetan Autonomous Region. One of his wishes is to soon curate a large-scale exhibition of these photos with massive print.
José was born and raised in Brittany, France, before moving to the United States of America. In 2016, he married and moved to Singapore, where he now manages COCO Creative Studio. As part of his studio, he ventures into the fields of commercial photography and video directing, working tirelessly to ensure the best quality of work.
Furthering his love for sharing the world through his lenses, he also conducts photography workshops to develop potential creative minds. In addition, José Jeuland is a regular contributor photojournalist at the international Lens Magazine for fine art photography, published by Art Market Global Media Company.
