JUN GUECO CRUZ | Bringing Life Out Of The Soil
“Creating enormous pieces of art that reflect biological processes on the cellular level reminds me constantly of how we are each changed through our personal journeys. We don’t usually see what is happening in our bodies—our cells automatically take care of their jobs, invisible to us, and typically without drawing any attention. But looking closely and artistically at how our bodies work reveals the transformative nature of ordinary biology”. -Jun Gueco Cruz
Jun Gueco Cruz, originally from Angeles City, Philippines, currently resides in Philadelphia, PA, and is a visual artist and a practicing healthcare provider, blending his passion for art with his knowledge of medical science. Cruz’s work is a mesmerizing fusion of spirituality and biological processes, presented through large-scale depictions of cellular activity. Inspired by his indigenous Kapampangan heritage, he infuses his art with cultural concepts like “planting seeds” and “bringing life out of the soil.”
A notable exhibition in 1997, titled Tanatanaman, paid homage to the act of planting and its relation to the essence of life. His pieces, distinguished by their spiky structures, have evolved to symbolize germinating seeds, embodying the concept of “life transformation.” This theme is further reflected in his 2017 Imperishable Seed series. Through his art, Cruz aims to convey the spiritual aspects of humanity as intertwined with scientific realities.
Cruz’s work has received international recognition, with exhibitions in the United States, Asia, and Europe, including prestigious events like the Florence Biennale and Miami Art Week. He has been honored with national and international awards in painting, sculpture, and mixed media. Cruz was awarded the ArtPrize 2024 Art Seed Grant and the GOLD LIST Award by the Art Market International Art Magazine. His artistic excellence was acknowledged by the Pinacothèque Museum in conjunction with his participation in the international selection of the Luxembourg Art Prize.
Looking ahead, Cruz is set to participate in the ArtPrize 2024 at Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Spectrum Miami in December 2024. His compelling artwork harmoniously unites scientific intricacies with spiritual dimensions, offering viewers a captivating glimpse into the beauty concealed within the human body.
Cruz’s most recent work in progress is his “More than a Conqueror” series. Crafted from an intricate blend of repurposed wood, brass, resin, and acrylic paint, the artwork pulses with organic vitality. Each material contributes to a rich tapestry that speaks to our inner landscapes, evoking the sensation of navigating the darkest valleys armed with unwavering faith. The cellular structures etched into the medium remind us of our interconnected existence.
The art pieces encapsulate the essence of facing life’s trials with unwavering confidence. They resonate with the message that we are accompanied by an ever-watchful, loving presence, guiding us through adversity with the assurance that every moment is woven with the intent of our good.
Through its dynamic interplay of materials and fusion of textures, this series transcends the ordinary, inviting viewers to ponder the unseen battles and victories that shape our lives. It reaches the soul, affirming that no adversary can sever the loving care bestowed upon us. It stands as a beacon of hope, reflecting the artist’s deep understanding that governs our existence, making us more than conquerors through Christ in the grand tapestry of life.
