Katy Bishop | Colorful Harmony
“I guide the pigments through a delicate balance between control and surrender.”
– Katy Bishop
“I am a painter who specializes in “expressive images” and gestural abstracts that blend elements of perception, randomness, and control.
My work ranges from bold, vibrant abstracts to emotionally subtle pieces that evoke a sense of harmony.
As an artist, I focus on painting what I feel rather than seeing. By doing so, I aim to capture the spirit of conversation and communicate emotions, feelings, and ideas that are difficult to express in words.

“In this artwork, my strokes and color choices—emerald greens, deep blues, and sudden bursts of magenta—convey a sense of dynamic movement, like peering into a vibrant, shifting landscape from a bird’s viewpoint.”
I enjoy working with alcohol inks on synthetic paper, canvas, and plexiglass. I guide the pigments to create various forms and effects using various techniques such as pushing, pulling, blowing, brushing, diluting, smudging, tilting, and blotting.
One aspect of my work that intrigues me is painting in reverse on plexiglass, which challenges me to rethink the concepts of background and foreground. When I flip the plexiglass around, it’s always exciting to reveal the completed vision.

My artistic journey began in Chicago as a young teen when I attended scholarship classes at the Art Institute. Inspired by great artists like Seurat, Richter, and Helen Frankenthaler, I learned to explore my artistic vision with insight, perseverance, and determination. After a successful career as a film producer, I found that working in the film and advertising industries didn’t fulfill my creative vision.
I experimented with various art forms such as pastels, acrylic painting, ceramics, photography, and jewelry design, but it wasn’t until 2020, when I discovered alcohol ink, thanks to a professional artist neighbor, that I found my artistic voice.

“In this artwork, I wanted to express the beauty underwater and the sense of peace amid the ocean’s power.”

“In this artwork, I dealt with the questions posed by the spacecraft launch…how did this universe start?”
