Suly Bornstein Wolff | BETWEEN TRADITION AND THE FUTURE
Suly Bornstein Wolff is a multidisciplinary artist that lives and works in Tel Aviv.
Her creative work is marked and affected by her being an immigrant who has been uprooted from one country (Brazil) to another (Israel).
While trying to accommodate herself to a new place, new language, and culture, she found herself attracted by certain species of trees that seemed alien to this new landscape, mainly tropical palm trees and Eucalyptuses. These trees were imported from other places for different reasons: The palm trees were meant to decorate and enrich Israeli gardens, and the Bauhaus buildings that populate beautifully widely the city of Tel Aviv and the Eucalyptuses were brought to since the middle of the 19th century in order to increase the density of the forest and give shade to the harsh sun and protection from winds. Bornstein Wolff’s art focuses on exploring urban nature, a nature that has somehow lost its connection to its immanent organic characteristics through man’s manipulation. Wolff’s artworks echo the alienation of humans from nature, one that is highly linked to our society’s urbanization.
As a multidisciplinary artist, she paints and creates objects that she merges into installations.
Wolff usually uses recycled materials, such as plastic bags, tiny children, plastic toys, old paintings, deflated balloons, etc. These are reincarnated in Wolff’s art to create diverse objects dealing with beautiful concepts, using patterns and distinctive aesthetics. Wolff changes her techniques and materials constantly, always atoning to her own sense of self and experiences while enhancing feminine creativity, strength, and spirituality.
Between tradition and the future, and contemporary design and heritage -Wolff’s works have a dual existence: on the one hand, they manifest reductive formal structures and colors.
On the other hand, they represent conceptual metaphors regarding human existence.
Suly Bornstein Wolff has exhibited in many solo and group exhibitions in Israel, Italy, the USA, India, and others.
Born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Currently lives and works in Tel-Aviv, Israel. I have studied interior design at Ort, School of Engineering, Tel-Aviv, and later on, studied art at the Avni College for the arts, in Tel-Aviv.
For many years, I continued my research and studies by working with prominent Israeli artists at their studio. Combining two different cultures, worlds, and questions regarding the sense of belonging still influences my entire work.
– Suly Bornstein Wolff
I create objects, installations as well as paintings. Usually, I create large scale paintings and objects. The subjects vary – from landscape to architecture, to abstract. Aesthetics are a major focus in my paintings, objects, and Installations. Even when creating an object, I emphasize the object’s quality and beauty by using ready-made material, as if it was jewelry.
In this, I address questions regarding the importance of recycling in order to preserve the quality of living in the 21st century and how we should preserve the earth.
Old and new glassware, sourced in Israel and around the world, from vintage shops and private collections, were turned into colorful and seductive objects of questionable functionality; Inspired by her childhood in Brazil, her life in Israel, and her travels to the Far East, Europe, and Africa.
