What distinguishes an art event is rarely its scale, but almost always the quality of its audience and the clarity of its vision.

With the Flanders Art Festival, Flanders introduces an overarching platform that is firmly grounded in both. Rather than an accumulation of stands or encounters, it proposes a considered dialogue between viewing, understanding, and connection. Two complementary events, Flanders Art Fair and ArtistMeeting, form a unified narrative: that of a region where art circulates, is sustained, and is shaped by a discerning and decisive collecting audience.

The choice of Bruges as a location is significant. With the development of BRUSK, the city’s new art hall, Bruges receives a strengthened institutional impulse that deepens its cultural landscape and sharpens its position within the contemporary art field. Within this context, the city increasingly asserts itself as a point of convergence between ancient and contemporary art. The Flanders Art Festival aligns with this evolution as a parallel initiative sharing a common ambition: to reinforce Bruges as a relevant destination within a layered artistic ecosystem.

Flanders Art Fair – A tradition, reinterpreted

Flanders Art Fair is rooted in a strong foundation: Flanders as a collecting region. Generations of collectors have fostered a climate defined by knowledge, discretion, and a pronounced commitment to quality. Today, this tradition translates into an active collecting field where works not only circulate, but are critically engaged with, and sustainably integrated into collections.

Within this framework, Flanders Art Fair brings together a selection of galleries with a clear positioning within the international art market. From established names to emerging galleries with a distinct vision, and from Old Masters to modern and contemporary art, a balanced composition emerges in which quality and collectability remain central.

The choice of the Belfry of Bruges reinforces this positioning. From 1983 to 2002, this site hosted the internationally recognized Bruges Art and Antiques Fair. The same organization, with over fifty years of experience, now continues to build on that legacy. With the Flanders Art Fair, this history finds a contemporary continuation, not as repetition but as reinterpretation in the current context.

Artistmeeting – Where art comes to life

ArtistMeeting creates a direct encounter between the artist, the artwork, and the audience, removing the distance inherent in traditional fair structures. This proximity allows works not only to be viewed, but also contextualized and critically examined.

Three distinct voices shape the curatorial direction. Hugo Brutin, long-standing member of AICA, brings a broad international perspective informed by decades of writing and his role as an artistic voice on Belgian radio. Hilde Van Canneyt is known for her in-depth conversations with artists and for foregrounding both emerging and established practices. Willem Elias, an expert in Belgian art and co-founder of the Higher Institute for Fine Arts, contributes a rigorous academic and art-historical perspective. Their combined selections yield a coherent, conceptually grounded presentation of artistic practices.

The jury reviews artists from around the world, and each member may nominate an artist or project for an award, ensuring targeted visibility within an international network of collectors and professionals.

Within this setting, discovery and validation coexist: emerging talent is given space, while established artists re-engage with an audience that actively seeks, questions, and collects.

A shared context

By bringing both initiatives together, the Flanders Art Festival creates an environment in which different dimensions of the art world complement one another.
