Fire Is The Test Of Gold
by Muktar Yusuf
There exists a deeper dimension to life—one that unfolds beyond the visible and lingers just at the edge of human understanding. My work is rooted in this tension between the known and the unknown, where existence reveals itself through a constant duality: light and darkness, hope and despair, life and death.

About the Artwork:
In Anxiety Cometh (Not), Muktar Yusuf constructs a surreal psychological landscape where the inner world becomes visible. The seated figure—calm yet contemplative—appears suspended between thought and emotion. From the body emerge luminous, fluid forms reminiscent of jellyfish or neural energy, symbolizing the often invisible forces of anxiety, memory, and imagination that move through the human mind.
Yusuf’s signature visual language blends metaphysical symbolism with vibrant color fields. The fiery reds surrounding the figure evoke tension and emotional intensity, while the glowing blues and yellows suggest transformation and illumination. Rather than depicting anxiety as purely destructive, the artist reframes it as a phenomenon that can be observed, understood, and ultimately transcended.
The crown of flowers resting on the figure’s head introduces a counterbalance to the darker elements within the composition. It represents growth, healing, and the resilience of the mind. The thorned form along the arm further hints at the pain that often accompanies introspection, while the radiant energy flowing from the figure’s hands suggests the possibility of reclaiming power over internal struggles.
Through this dynamic interplay of symbolism, Yusuf invites viewers into a deeply introspective space—one where anxiety is acknowledged but not allowed to dominate. Instead, the painting proposes a quiet act of defiance: the recognition that within the chaos of the mind lies the potential for clarity, transformation, and self-possession.
“Fire is the test of gold; adversity, of strong men.” — Martha Graham

About The Artwork | Safe in the Hands of the Father
In Safe in the Hands of the Father, Muktar Yusuf presents a tender meditation on divine protection, surrender, and spiritual rest. The central figure leans gently into an unseen embrace, eyes closed in quiet trust, as if cradled within a presence greater than the self. Draped in soft luminous cloth, the figure appears suspended between the earthly and the sacred.
Flames of radiant gold rise from the figure’s head like a living crown of light, symbolizing spiritual awakening and divine energy. Resting near the temple is a striking blue rose—an emblem recurring in Yusuf’s work that represents grace, hope, and divine beauty emerging from human vulnerability. A second rose appears lower within the composition, echoing the balance between earthly struggle and spiritual refuge.
The surrounding field of warm reds and glowing oranges envelops the figure in an atmosphere of warmth and protection, suggesting both the fire of transformation and the comforting embrace of divine presence. Yusuf’s expressive brushwork and luminous palette transform the composition into a visual prayer—an image of peace found not through control, but through surrender.
Through Safe in the Hands of the Father, Yusuf reflects on the profound human desire for refuge and guidance. The work becomes a spiritual affirmation: that even amid life’s uncertainties and trials, there exists a place of rest—held safely within the hands of the divine.
About The Artwork | The Longing,
In The Longing, Muktar Yusuf presents a contemplative figure suspended between suffering and transcendence. Draped in luminous white, the subject stands with eyes gently closed, embodying a moment of inward searching, an intimate dialogue between the human spirit and the unseen divine.
A radiant halo of fiery light surrounds the figure’s head, suggesting both spiritual awakening and inner turmoil. The crown of thorns rests across the forehead, invoking sacrifice, endurance, and the burden of moral consciousness. Yet the vivid blue rose that emerges from the thorns introduces a quiet counterpoint: a symbol of hope, grace, and renewal born from pain.
The surrounding field of turbulent reds and burning oranges intensifies the emotional atmosphere, echoing the tensions between suffering and salvation, darkness and illumination, recurring themes in Yusuf’s metaphysical visual language. The glowing outline around the figure separates the body from the chaos behind it, suggesting the fragile boundary between earthly struggle and spiritual transcendence.
Through The Longing, Yusuf reflects on humanity’s deep desire for redemption, meaning, and light in times of uncertainty. The painting becomes not merely a portrait, but a meditation on resilience, the quiet hope that even in the midst of trials, the human soul continues to seek the divine.

About The Artwork | One Light; One Comfort
In One Light; One Comfort, Muktar Yusuf constructs a luminous meditation on resilience, interiority, and the quiet persistence of hope. The central figure—calm, composed, yet introspective—emerges from a field of shifting color and symbolic energy, embodying a psychological and spiritual equilibrium amidst surrounding turbulence.
A radiant halo-like aura envelopes the subject, transforming light into both a protective force and a metaphysical presence. This illumination is not merely atmospheric; it is conceptual—suggesting an inner awakening, a clarity that endures even in moments of uncertainty. Yusuf’s deliberate use of warm golds and deep earthen tones anchors the figure in humanity, while electric currents of color—vivid pinks, blues, and fiery oranges—pulse around and through the composition, evoking unseen emotional and spiritual currents.
The recurring orb-like forms—fragile yet charged—operate as metaphors for the human condition: vessels of thought, memory, and vulnerability. One rests delicately at the figure’s fingertip, as though balanced between control and surrender, while another appears fractured, releasing energy into the surrounding space. These forms suggest the tension between containment and release, stability and disruption—echoing the dualities that define Yusuf’s broader practice.
The figure’s gesture—one hand drawn inward, the other raised—creates a visual dialogue between self-preservation and outward engagement. It is a posture of quiet strength, where comfort is not derived from external certainty but from an internalized light. The subtle crown of organic, floral abstraction atop the head further reinforces themes of growth, transformation, and the cyclical nature of renewal.
Rooted in both figurative realism and fantastical symbolism, One Light; One Comfort exemplifies Yusuf’s ability to merge narrative clarity with metaphysical inquiry. The painting becomes a contemplative space—inviting viewers to consider the sources of their own resilience and the enduring presence of light within the human experience.
“Through painting, I explore these opposing forces as interconnected realities rather than contradictions. In my compositions, light becomes both a symbol and a presence—an enduring force that persists even in moments of uncertainty. It is through this lens that I attempt to restore a sense of hope in a world where that image is gradually fading.“
About The Artwork | The Becoming II
In The Becoming II, Muktar Yusuf explores the transformative moment between suffering and awakening. The solitary figure emerges from a field of burning ochres and deep reds, enveloped by radiant streams of golden light that pulse outward like living energy. The crown of thorns rests across the figure’s brow, yet from it blooms a striking blue rose—an emblem of grace and spiritual renewal born from hardship.
Unlike a passive martyr, the figure here stands upright and resolute. One arm glows as though forged in flame, suggesting the alchemy of pain into strength. Yusuf renders the body with sculptural precision, emphasizing the tension between vulnerability and resilience. Draped in white cloth, the figure appears both earthly and transcendent—caught in the sacred threshold of transformation.
The swirling luminous aura surrounding the body becomes a visual metaphor for inner becoming: the unseen process through which adversity refines the spirit. Rooted in metaphysical reflections on hope, duality, and redemption, The Becoming I presents the human condition as a continuous journey of emergence. Through fire, endurance, and faith, the self is not merely tested—it is remade.
“Even in fragmentation, there exists a light that steadies the soul—one that comforts, restores,
and endures.”
My inspirations are drawn from scripture, personal experience, music, and cinema—each offering fragments of meaning that I translate into visual form. Working primarily in oil on canvas, I seek to create works that are not only aesthetically engaging but spiritually resonant—images that invite reflection, introspection, and a renewed awareness of the unseen forces shaping our lives.
