Visual Philosophy:
Metaphorical Organic Abstraction
By Irina Howard
“My body of work explores the hidden structures that shape human experience through a visual language of organic abstraction. Rooted in what I describe as Visual Philosophy—the use of visual art to investigate the human condition through beauty, meaning, and reflection—the series examines themes of vulnerability and resilience, memory and transformation, chaos and order.”

Working across oil painting and sculpture, I employ recurring symbolic forms such as spirals, cellular structures, networks, and layered organic patterns. These motifs draw inspiration from both natural systems and psychological landscapes, revealing connections between inner experience and the larger rhythms of life. Through a predominantly monochromatic palette, textured surfaces, and layered compositions, I seek to create works that invite sustained contemplation and emotional engagement.
The paintings and sculptures function as meditations on the unseen forces that shape us: the patterns we inherit, the experiences that transform us, and the delicate balance between fragility and endurance. Material contrasts—transparency and opacity, strength and delicacy, structure and fluidity—become metaphors for the complexities of human existence.
“Rather than offering fixed narratives, the work creates space for reflection, encouraging viewers to discover their own meanings within the layered relationships of form, texture, and symbol. Through this ongoing exploration, I seek to illuminate the interconnected patterns that unite personal experience with universal human questions.”

“My practice is grounded in Visual Philosophy—the use of visual art to explore the human condition through the union of beauty, meaning, and conscience.
Working across painting, sculpture, and installation, I investigate the hidden patterns that shape human experience: memory and healing, vulnerability and resilience, chaos and order, growth and decay. Through these recurring dualities, I explore how seemingly opposing forces coexist and inform one another, revealing the complex architecture beneath everyday life.
My visual language is rooted in metaphorical organic abstraction. Circles, spirals, cellular structures, and flowing forms function as a symbolic system through which emotional, psychological, and philosophical ideas take material form. Rather than illustrating concepts directly, I seek to create spaces where they can be experienced. Some aspects of being human—grief, tenderness, hope, moral courage—often resist language. Through image, texture, and form, I aim to make these invisible realities tangible.
Informed by studies in cognitive psychology, art therapy, and personal healing, my work occupies a space between aesthetic experience and psychological inquiry. Each piece begins as a question and develops through a dialogue between conscious intention and intuitive discovery. Working slowly and deliberately, I build surfaces through layers of construction, erasure, and refinement, allowing meaning to emerge through the process itself.
A predominantly black-and-white palette defines much of my work.

By limiting color, I focus attention on value, structure, texture, and rhythm.
Techniques such as glazing, scumbling, and chiaroscuro create depth and ambiguity, emphasizing transformation rather than fixed states.
In recent sculptural and installation works, this investigation extends into three dimensions, where material contrasts—fragility and strength, transparency and opacity—become metaphors for the human condition.
At its core, my practice is an inquiry into the deeper dimensions of culture and consciousness. In contrast to the speed and surface orientation of contemporary consumer culture, I seek to create work that invites contemplation, emotional awareness, and genuine connection. Through Visual Philosophy, I hope to offer spaces where viewers can pause, reflect, and engage with questions of meaning, responsibility, and what it means to live fully human lives.”
