RAFAEL ASHKENAZY | A DREAM COMES TRUE
“Since childhood, I was always intrigued by different materials, exploring and experimenting, aiming to reach my personal understanding of the surrounding reality and the world. It was an experiment to test my limitations and break my conventions and boundaries with myself.
Those special years led me to a unique point of view on the world and to understand my abilities. I feel obligated to share this gift of creation hidden within me and to expose my artistic style created from years of learning and material experience. “
– Rafael Ashkenazy
Rafael Ashkenazy (b. 1972) is an autodidact artist lives and works in Tel Aviv, Israel.
After years of working as an interior designer, he decided to make a shift in his life and dedicate himself fully to creating art. Finally, the dream began to be built. Five years ago, he left his apartment, opened a large-space studio where he could live and work without any limitations, and started his journey in the art field.
With his experience with construction and technical knowledge, Ashkenazy’s first artwork was created with white iron wire, which was the base of a horsehead sculpture. Later on, during the years, he combined different materials in his work, such as coal, wood, clay, lead, and various iron wires, flexible material that allowed him to transform digital art sketches into physical 3D large-scale sculptures.
Ashkenazy’s main enjoyment is bringing life to ‘Dead Materials’ by creating dynamic figures.
His artistic style has been built based on one rule: No rules exist in combining materials.
He is working on his upcoming exhibition and will never stop keeping the dream alive.
